This chapter focuses on the author's return to civilian life in 1945. He obtained the post of medical registrar at the Royal Infirmary, where he taught six to eight medical students, and in September 1946, he took the London Membership Examination which he eventually passed. The author later worked as registrar for the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. While studying tropical medicine and attending lectures, he became friendly with Dr Wilson, the senior company doctor for the Alfred Holt Shipping Line, who asked if he would be interested in acting as ship's surgeon for a voyage South Africa, a position that he accepted. The author departed Liverpool on 6 June 1947, aboard the Priam.
