In 1857, a small part of the archives of the former Breton Chambre des Comptes was discovered by Héracle-Olivier-Jean-Baptiste de Blocquel de Croix, Baron de Wismes and his friend, Arthur Le Moyne de la Borderie. Between July 1795 and October 1796, the Commission de Triage at Nantes systematically analysed the remnants of the Chambre des Comptes as well as those of the archives of the États de Bretagne, ecclesiastical houses and seigneurial families. The archives yielded some 3,000 liasses in addition to those already identified in the Chambre. This chapter, which examines the medieval documents found in the Chambre and the archives and how some documents dispersed during the French Revolution have reappeared, also considers how such records illustrate the history of late medieval Brittany.
