Many scholars and composers tackle issues of intelligibility or coherence in the relationship between words and music. The notion of florid contrapuntal vocal textures may affect the accuracy and sympathetic perception of the words. This chapter examines issues of coherence and fragmentation in vocal music after 1950. It first considers some of the reasons why relative coherence is a matter of legitimate artistic consideration before turning to the idea of fragmentation by focusing on Igor Stravinsky's A Sermon, A Narrative and A Prayer (1961) and Krzyszstof Penderecki's St Luke Passion (1966).
