This introductory chapter briefly sets out the book's purpose – to explore the extent to which travel writing has had an impact on perceptions of the Americas and the way in which the United States is perceived by its own citizens and the citizens of other countries in mutually transformative ways. It addresses not only America as a destination to be reached and explored, but also America as a home base or departure point. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
