This chapter discusses the emergence of totalitarianism in Europe. It traces the intellectual origins of totalitarianism and examines the relationship between democracy and rightwing dictatorship in interwar Europe. It then discusses two rightwing dictators in interwar Europe: Mussolini and Hitler. Some other dictatorship regimes are also discussed, including Soviet communism, fascist dictatorships in Italy and Germany and the authoritarian quasi-dictatorship in Hungary.
