This chapter focuses on the ideals of freedom and fundamental human rights. First, it outlines the nature of freedom and its social construction in relation to slavery. Next, it discusses the origins of freedom in the ancient and medieval west. The chapter also discusses the emergence of freedom as a result of agrarian capitalist revolutions of Europe, and examines religion, race and slavery in the American reconstruction of freedom. Finally, the chapter describes the development of rights theory and rights rhetoric.
