MacBride, the SDLP and Sinn Féin
MacBride, the SDLP and Sinn Féin
This chapter discusses the Social Democratic and Labour Party's (SDLP) ambivalent attitude towards the MacBride Principles. It describes how Sinn Féin made the MacBride Principles one of the main planks of its campaign in an effort to capture the Catholic working-class vote. It also considers alternative anti-discrimination proposals — the SDLP's Charter and the Sinn Féin's Proposals — neither of which captured the public's imagination as much as the MacBride Principles.
