This chapter explores the role of architecture in the contemporary European context. It examines the European Union's attempts to mobilize European architects to develop socially significant forms. The chapter also assesses the role of nation states in ‘Europeanizing’ existing national architectural symbols, illustrated in reference to the rebuilding of the Reichstag by Norman Foster.
