‘Housing the Deliberations’

New York, War, and Frank O'Hara

(p.13) ‘Housing the Deliberations’
Frank O'Hara Now

This chapter focuses on New York. It considers the warping of historical perspective that follows 9/11 and the demise of the New York that hosted the various New York Schools. It suggests that this New York was ‘founded and terminated by acts of war’, book-ended by the Second World War and 9/11. The chapter pays particular attention to O'Hara's late long poem ‘Biotherm’, discussing the implications of its ‘broken and looped phrasings’ for the very notion of relationship in O'Hara's work.
