This chapter examines the history the emergence of modern sophistication during the Romantic era. It provides literary, cultural, and critical contexts for the period and analyses a wide range of authors and texts. It suggests sophistication first appeared to be incompatible with Romanticism given the sophisticates' style, wit, urbanity, polish, and the Romantic poetry's idealisation of innocence and naturalness. This chapter also considers how sophistication invaded even the most resolutely pastoral poems and most tear–drenched fictions of the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Keywords:   sophistication, Romantic era, urbanity, style, innocence, naturalness, Romanticism, Romantic poetry
