Teaching and Research in French Cinema1

(p.171) 14 Teaching and Research in French Cinema1
French Studies in and for the Twenty-first Century

Phil Powrie

Keith Reader

Liverpool University Press

This chapter first considers the ways in which teaching in French cinema has evolved since the 1970s. It then discusses developments in research, with a strong focus on the UK, but also taking into account work done in France and the USA. It concludes that the distinguishing feature of UK-based scholarship in French cinema has been the gender paradigm, now being adopted by French scholars; and close attention paid to popular cinema, whether popular genres or stars, which has been less of a feature of research in France.

Keywords:   French cinema, film studies, higher education, UK, gender, popular cinema
