This chapter examines the different types of street robbery and crimes in Liverpool during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These include the highway robbery of highwaymen and footpads, pickpocketing, garrotting, and child–stripping. This chapter also considers the impact of the advent of rail transportation and the growth of professional policing on the movement of criminals out of their squalid slums to locations where they can look for amusement or opportunities to thieve.
