This chapter examines the business culture in the British Atlantic in terms of space, place and people. It describes the European Atlantic economies during the period from 1750 to 1815 and the ports and commodities in which the merchants traded. It also provides brief biographical background on some of the major personalities in British Atlantic trade, including Samuel Rainford, James Lawson and Andrew Clow. This chapter also contends that the success of these merchants may be attributed to relatively homogenous, commonly understood and conformed-to business culture.
