This chapter examines Theobald Wolfe Tone's continuing work on Catholic emancipation and considers the prospect of an alliance between advanced Catholics and radical Presbyterians. It describes the highlights of the first reading of the Catholic relief bill on January 25, 1792 which led the government to considers the Belfast Presbyterians, the United Irishmen, and the personnel of the Catholic Committee as public enemies. This chapter also highlights the Catholics' concern that their association with the northern republicans would weaken their campaign.
