Mission in Decline
Mission in Decline
This chapter focuses on decline of Theobald Wolfe Tone's mission to obtain French support for a revolution in Ireland. It discusses the impact of the death of Louis Lazare Hoche and the successful coup d'état which ushered in a more cynical French Directory on the prospect of Tone's mission. It explains that the established communication channels were disrupted by Hoche's death and that the idealism and internationalism which helped in his 1796 negotiations with the French had been eliminated in the new regime.
