This introduction by Peter Robinson begins by outlining the origin of the book’s title, noting the inspiration found in Roy Fisher’s 1965 poem ‘The Thing about Joe Sullivan’. The chapter goes on to provide a detailed biography of Fisher’s life, starting by detailing the poet’s childhood, 40 year writing career, to discussing his poetry published in the late 1990s. Robinson also considers Fisher’s readership and the misunderstanding often found within audience reception, and finally concludes with a comment on the level of variety contained in the poet’s literature.
