In Une Nouvelle Région du monde Glissant's thought on Relation and difference is brought together with his longstanding emotional engagement with landscape, to create a new aesthetic. Landscapes are inherently meaningful, and it is the writer's or artist's ability to ‘fuse’ with them that creates the work - an ability, however, that the modern world has largely lost and must re-learn from indigenous peoples who have ‘stayed in the same place’. But equally, the work is the product of the Deleuzean matrix of difference that Glissant here sees as generating all identities: it is the generative force of these differences that allow the work to jump the boundary between itself and the real. This chapter traces Glissant's attempt to synthesize these two apparently conflicting formulations of the work's relation to the real, arguing that the role of landscape is to replace Deleuze's rejection of identity and stability with a concept of ‘changing-remaining’, and that Glissant also departs from Deleuzean difference by integrating into his own theorization a dialectical conception of change and identity.
