This chapter focusses on Liverpool in general 1750-1800 and sets the scene for the rest of the book. Subjects discussed include population and commercial growth, the physical expansion of the town as population quadrupled in half a century and the development of a commercial infrastructure with the building of docks, canals and improved roads. Social developments are also discussed. These include the building of attractive houses and facilities for entertainment such as public walks, horse racing, assemblies and theatres. The local newspaper has been the main source, though use has also been made of the diary kept by Hannah Lightbody in the late 1780s. Overall, Liverpool’s social development was similar to that in the towns of southern England, but about 50 years later.
