Using Victor I. Stoichita’s notion of the “shadow stage” of childhood development and Siegfried Kracauer’s notions about personal photographs, the chapter deals with poems whose speakers describe themselves in childhood photographs. The poets examined are Robert Penn Warren, Zbigniew Herbert and John Ashbery.
