The chapter examines the significance and uses of the 23-F, the failed coup d’etat of 1981. A look into the various interpretation of this event and examining how its outcome has generally been understood as evidence that Spain had finally overcome its authoritarian past and was firmly set on its path to democracy. Through the analysis of Javier Cercas’s Anatomía de un instante, a film and two television mini-series, the chapter discusses the meaning, reinterpretation and reenactment of this historical episode as a way to establish an intimate connection from the present with the past.
