In this epilogue, award-winning Guyanese novelist and activist Oonya Kempadoo offers an evocative sketch of Trinidad’s Port of Spain, adapted from her novel All Decent Animals (2013). Kempadoo’s fiction has long been interested in exploring the interconnections between landscape, identity, sexuality, and politics. ‘Tingaling’, is a compelling description of the aesthetics of Carnival and its relationship to the urban environment. The piece prompts us to consider Carnival as an ecological project. The narrative reveals how the ecological transformations through which Trinidad has developed – resource extraction, the exploitation of landscapes through cash-crop agriculture, the production of waste, and the re-shaping of bodies and labour regimes – are incorporated and aestheticized within the Carnival procession.
