This chapter examines the persistent presence of France's Algerian pasts in the French public sphere and visual culture's role in sustaining and problematising understandings both of that past and of France's post-colonial relationship with Algeria. It considers how popular beaux livres (coffee table books) and collections of colonial postcards perpetuate nostalgia for French Algeria (so-called Nostalgérie), yet locate it within an irrecoverable past. It concludes by assessing the relative place and significance of French Algeria in contemporary France.
