(p.47) Chapter 3 Inscription and Experience: The Politics and Aesthetics of Nature Tourism
Sacred Modernity

Tariq Jazeel

Liverpool University Press

By focussing on archaeological practice specifically, this chapter focuses on the anti-colonial re-inscription of Ruhuna National Park with pre-colonial Sinhala and Buddhist landscape. Using archival work in combination with ethnographic research, the chapter draws the connections between late colonial and post-independent nationalist archaeological work in the park and Ruhuna's contemporary affective and phenomenological resonances for nature tourists. By doing this, the chapter traces the existence of, and develops an argument about, the political and historical resonance of these non-dualistic aesthetics and their implication in the instantiation of Sinhala-Buddhist hegemony in the postcolonial Sri Lankan national.
