(p.14) 1 The Fugitives: Anarchist Pathways Toward London
The Knights Errant of Anarchy

Pietro Di Paola

Liverpool University Press

This chapter focuses on the settlement of the colony of anarchist refugees in London and their relationship with the colony of Italian emigrants. It first provides an overview of the political climate in Italy that forced militants to either go underground or flee into exile in order to escape severe repression at home. Most of the anarchists found refuge in countries such as France, Belgium and Switzerland, while others emigrated to the United States or established small communities in South America, the Levant and the Balkans. Another destination was England, one of the most prominent centres of political emigration in Europe and known for consistently allowing free entry to religious and political refugees. This chapter looks at the liberal asylum regime that characterised British policy in the Victorian age and how it facilitated the settlement of anarchists in London, where they remained until World War I. It also describes the political activities of Italian anarchists and other political refugees in the city.
