This chapter examines what form of social being can be conveyed in poetry by focusing on women’s experimental poetry in Britain. More specifically, it analyses the lyric poems of Veronica Forrest-Thomson and Wendy Mulford, both of whom are concerned with the question of who is produced in and by the writing when ‘I’ writes a poem. It first considers Forrest-Thomson’s work in the context of good and bad naturalisation, as well as her conception of tradition. It then turns to Mulford’s notion of tradition within the context of feminism and her efforts to write politics as lyric and/or lyric as politics.
