Problems of Patronage: Horace, Epistles 1.7.46–98 and Swift's Imitation
Problems of Patronage: Horace, Epistles 1.7.46–98 and Swift's Imitation
[Previously unpublished]
Maecenas's role and reputation as an ideal patron is considered in the light of what is known of Maecenas's background and his friendship with Horace. The dual pressures of friendship and duty that came with this patronage are shown to have their effect on Horace's writing, specifically the Epistles. Comparison is drawn with Swift, whose own relations with influential people are touched upon, especially Harley, Lord Oxford. Horace's relation to Maecenas and Swift's to Harley are seen to share some ground.
